Thankfully, we’ve got a self-care offering that everyone can get into. Bluebird’s DIY CBD body butter recipe is designed to help you feel luxurious while infusing your body with empowering botanicals.

Body butter is generally centered around one major ingredient - plant-based fat. In order to get the rich creaminess and thickness that body butters are cherished for, you must select your plant fats based on consistency and fat concentrations.
Most body butter recipes involve mixing one of four “butters” - cocoa, shea, mango, or kokum - with another plant-based oil. Your options are truly endless here. When shopping for plant-based oils, you’ll likely encounter avocado, neem, olive, coconut, safflower, palm, grapeseed, macadamia, camellia seed, apricot kernel, and even rosehip oil. However, some of these oils - particularly palm, neem, coconut, and macadamia - are so rich and slow-absorbing that mixing them into your skincare products might leave you with uncomfortably greasy skin.
Because of this, we opted for safflower oil in this particular recipe. It’s a little pricier than your standard olive or coconut oil, but it’s not a total wallet buster. It also boasts a very light texture that leaves your skin moisturized, not slick. If you’re able to invest just a little bit more, grapeseed oil is another great choice for its rich concentration of vitamins and omega fatty acids.
Even by selecting less oily ingredients, you still run the risk of ending up with a greasy body butter. Arrowroot powder comes to the rescue in these situations by helping to absorb excess oil. Plus, it’s rich in vitamin B and other essential minerals.
Another great thing about DIY body butter recipes is that they are easy to infuse with all sorts of extra vitamins, minerals, scents, and botanicals. This particular recipe calls for a shot of vitamin E oil for the extra boost of antioxidants.

Bluebird Botanicals CBD Body Butter Recipe
Recipe makes 6 oz of body butter
6 tablespoons of safflower oil (optional sub for grapeseed or coconut oil)
6 tablespoons of refined shea butter (optional sub for cocoa or mango butter)
1 tablespoon of arrowroot powder
1 tablespoon of vitamin E oil
Optional essential oils - Total 30 drops
10 drops of lemon
10 drops of sage
10 drops of rosemary
- Add the safflower oil, shea butter, and CBD oil together in a large bowl or standing mixer bowl.
- Add the arrowroot powder.
- Start mixing with the standing or hand mixer for 2 to 3 minutes, until it is fully combined with a creamy consistency.
- Add essential oils, if desired, and mix thoroughly.
- Transfer to a container. Mason jars and old candle holders with airtight lids work really well - but make sure you thoroughly cleanse and disinfect the container first!
