Sustainable Cannabis Companies For the Win!

Sustainability has been top of mind for citizens of the world recently. As we face climate change and the impending environmental consequences, individuals and businesses alike are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and preserve the Earth’s valuable resources.

This is an already challenging task for most but the obstacles are particularly high for cannabis companies. A recent Forbes article elucidated the challenges of producing eco-friendly cannabis in the absence of research on how to do so efficiently with a minimal carbon footprint. Likewise, cannabis growers are often required to adhere to residential and building codes that force them to consume more energy overall. They are also bound by strict packaging and labeling requirements that leave single-use plastics and other wasteful components as the only available options.

However, some cannabis companies are rising to the challenge. Bluebird takes sustainability very seriously, and we wanted to highlight the others in the industry that are doing the same.

Sana Packaging

Sana Packaging takes the versatility of hemp to the next level. The company was founded by two fellow Coloradoans in Boulder in 2017 with the mission to create cannabis packaging for a circular economy - that is, to maximize resourcefulness and minimize waste and pollution. The company designs and develops differentiated, sustainable, and compliant packaging solutions for the cannabis industry using hemp, reclaimed ocean plastic, and other sustainable materials.

They partnered with Oceanworks to create a line of cannabis packaging products that are made from 100% reclaimed ocean plastic and are 100% HDPE (#2 recyclable). They are also one of the first packaging companies to develop 100% plant-based hemp plastic containers for other cannabis purveyors. That’s what we call a comprehensive cannabis experience!

STO Responsible

STO Responsible is another Boulder-based brand getting innovative with their packaging in an eco-friendly way. Their main product is the STO Box - a container for cannabis products made from oxygen-driven, degradable polypropylene which is an accepted material at recycling facilities. However, if the package does not make it into the recycling bin and ends up in a landfill, it will undergo an accelerated biodegradation process.

The containers come in a variety of sizes to suit practically any type of product. The company also provides custom design services to actually allow their clients to showcase their brand with beautiful wrapping, something that hasn’t been accessible to most cannabis companies up until this point.

Hemp Press

These folks deliver their talents from Eugene, Oregon. Hemp Press was founded by Matthew Glyer in 2013 as the first exclusively hemp paper print shop in the nation. The company specializes in creating and designing hemp-based packaging for hemp and marijuana-based products - in fact, if you’ve picked up one of Bluebird’s Hemp Sample Packs or Concentrated Sample Packs recently, then you’ve seen their work first hand. Hemp Press has provided Bluebird with all sorts of printing solutions, including our business cards, sales catalogs, brochures, packaging cartons, and more.

“Ultimately, hemp is good for the planet,” Glyer said in a recent interview with Green Eugene. “That’s why we need to keep growing it and keep making everyday things out of it if we can.”

Bluebird Botanicals' Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Bluebird's mission is to spread health and happiness to all, and we recognize that this starts with healing our own planet. Our company has doubled down on its efforts to be responsible stewards of our environment and employ sustainable business practices to conserve the Earth's valuable resources.

We've already gotten started through our use of sustainably sourced sugarcane packaging for our CBD lotions as well as our commitment to regenerative agricultural practices on several of our partnering hemp farms. However, we recognize that we still have a lot of room to grow. We aim to further reinforce these efforts with our farming partners as we head into the new year and beyond.

Join the conversation as we work together to build a healthier future for our people and our planet.
