Can You Buy CBD on Amazon?
These days you might expect to find just about anything sitting on the virtual shelves of the ecommerce mega-giant, Amazon. But you know what you won’t find?
Reliable CBD products.
That’s because Amazon directly prohibits products with cannabidiol (CBD) from being sold on their marketplace… At least for now.
In this article, we’ll dive into why Amazon prohibited CBD sales, why the CBD products you find on Amazon aren't reliable, and how you can find safe and effective CBD products today.
Why doesn’t Amazon sell CBD?
Though the 2018 Farm Bill paved the way for hemp to become a more mainstream product moving forward, the FDA still hasn't provided clear directions on how CBD and other hemp-derived cannabinoids will be handled.
This has created a reluctance in large retailers, like Amazon, to carry the products. For Amazon, an already trillion-dollar company, the potential risk of an FDA crackdown currently outweighs the reward of making CBD and other cannabinoids widely available on their marketplace.
Unfortunately, this lack of adoption from the large retailers has cooled the CBD market, posing issues both for hemp farmers and many small businesses within the cannabinoid industry.
Because of this, Congress recently called out the FDA for its lack of guidance, and urged them to provide a clear framework for CBD and other hemp-derived cannabinoids prior to the upcoming 2023 Farm Bill. Until that happens, don’t expect to find your favorite CBD brands on Amazon anytime soon.
Which brings us to our next point…
Should you buy hemp products on Amazon?
Short answer: probably not.
Due to a loophole in language, you might stumble across some “hemp” products that aren’t directly labeled CBD, but claim to have many of the same benefits. While it’s possible you might find a quality hemp product on the Amazon marketplace, there are a few important things to keep in mind.
Since Amazon maintains very little oversight on these products, and just about anyone can throw up a page claiming to have a quality product…It’s hard to know what you’re really getting.
There have already been numerous reports of supplements on Amazon having mislabeled ingredients and others being outright tainted. Basically, Amazon is a bit of a wild west when it comes to hemp and other supplements. So it’s probably not worth gambling your health on unknown products, when plenty of transparent and reliable options are already available.
Speaking of which…
