First stop: inhalation station.
Inhaling or vaping CBD is one of the most bioavailable ways to help CBD take action quickly – up to about an hour faster than ingesting, in fact. (You can read more about this in Bluebird’s Guide to Choosing CBD Vape Juice). So, if you’re looking for something fast-acting, this may be the best option for you.
Inhaling CBD isn’t exclusively reserved for vaping, either. There are companies that offer CBD flower that looks almost just like recreational cannabis, but has less than 0.3% THC. Smoking or inhaling CBD flower boasts the same bioavailable benefits as vaping CBD but avoids treading into precarious territory because it’s all natural without any additives.
Obviously not everyone is enamored with smoking or vaping, and ingesting your CBD this way does have a couple potential pitfalls.
First: it can be difficult to identify and consistently get the best serving size for you. Unlike taking a dropper full of CBD oil or a capsule with a pre-measured serving size, taking a pull from your vape pen or smoking CBD flower doesn’t guarantee you’ll receive the same amount of CBD each time.
Second: regardless of how “healthy” your chosen inhalation method is, there is still much that remains unstudied about vaping with regards to long-term health impacts. And it is known that inhaling any sort of smoke – whether it be from burning wood, tobacco, or hemp flower – can release toxins and irritants that cause damage to the lungs.
Traveling to inhalation station not your thing? Well, maybe it’s time for a little spraycation.
CBD Oral Spray is another common method of ingestion, and this one avoids the drawbacks of the inhalation mentioned above. CBD sprays typically suggest giving a spritz or two in the mouth. This method can also be beneficial for those who may have trouble swallowing or digesting supplements.
That being said, this method also has a couple drawbacks. Those that want their CBD to be absorbed more slowly over time should steer away from CBD sprays or smoking/inhaling CBD. This method also has the potential to irritate the mouth if you have a canker sore or other laceration.
CBD Oil is often also taken this way, though you can swallow it as opposed to placing it under your tongue, if that tickles your fancy. This brings us to perhaps the most varied of our versatile CBD ingestion methods: just eat it!
CBD oils, CBD soft gels, gummies, chocolate, honey… you can eat CBD in virtually any form you can dream up. Eating CBD is perhaps the simplest and most well-known method of consumption, and with good reason: it is relatively easy to determine serving size utilizing a dropper, and eating your CBD allows for a ton of customization to meet your needs or preferred tastes.
Don’t love the taste of full-spectrum hemp extracts? Try them in CBD soft gel format, or blend your CBD into your favorite food or drink item. Bluebird has crafted CBD recipes for everything from salad dressing and barbecue sauce to Thanksgiving favorites and a CBD dirty chai latte, but you could also adapt your own go-to kitchen concoctions to include a serving of CBD.
Many companies offer premade CBD noms, which can also make it easy to know how much CBD you’re getting per serving. However, this brings us to perhaps the biggest potential risk with eating your CBD: the other things aside from CBD that are found in many of these products.
The most common culprit is sugar. The majority of pre-made CBD edibles, especially gummies, are rife with sugar. These more closely resemble sugary sweets than dietary supplements, and too much sugar has been linked to chronic inflammation, which is definitely not a key pillar of wellness.
Even for those edible CBD products that steer aware from sugary sweetness, you should still lend an extra element of product review and ingredient evaluation to your decision-making process.
As with preparing your own meals at home versus eating out at a restaurant, picking a simpler CBD product like Bluebird’s Hemp Classic, which has full-spectrum hemp extract and organic hemp seed oil as its only two ingredients, gives you more control over what you’re putting into your body.
Rub It In, Rub It In
Topicals are perhaps the most widespread (pun intended) method of getting your CBD.
Similar to inhaling your CBD, this method allows you to reap the benefits of CBD without it having to pass through the digestive tract. Topical CBD products like Bluebird’s Hemp Essential can also allow you to apply CBD selectively to target areas, which is a major pro for some. Like with all of the other ways to use CBD, topical products aren’t going to be the best fit for everyone. Because of the concentration of CBD needed in topicals to make an impact on your endocannabinoid system, these products may have a higher price point that some of the other alternatives. They’re also not an ideal choice for those who may have texture aversions, skin sensitivities, or those who simply don’t like using a lotion or salve.
